Empoli’s geographic location, in the heart of Tuscany, along the Arno River and practically halfway between Florence and Pisa, has made it a perfect crossroads for business and trade since antiquity.
The Arno River to the north and the Elsa River to the west remain the natural boundaries of the municipal territory, an area marked by a gentle landscape alternating level ground, now for the most part built up, and picturesque hills.
Outside the historic centre, the old churches, monasteries, towers and fortifications that dot the area tell the story of the people who lived there, as do the traces of the various crops that permanently altered the landscape over the centuries, creating a typically Tuscan cross between garden and countryside.
