The Civic Museums of Empoli offer visitors a wide choice of themes and collections, all to be explored: the glass museum, the collections of ancient and contemporary art, the paleontological museum and two house-museums of a famous painter and an illustrious musician await you!
Jacopo Carucci, destined to become famous as il Pontormo, was born in 1494, in these rooms, overlooking the road that runs through the village of Pontorme. One of the best known painters of Mannerism, or “Maniera Moderna”, Jacopo spent his childhood in this house, which has now become a museum and houses a documentation center for his work. Exhibited here are objects, such as the facsimile of his famous Diary, bearing witness to the artist's personal life, and works that recall his artistic expression, such as the extraordinary 16th-century copy of the Madonna del libro, a work by Pontormo whose original autograph version has so far remained unknown.Located a few steps from the house-museum, in the church of San Michele Arcangelo, is the altarpiece depicting Saints John the Evangelist and Michael,he most important legacy left by Jacopo to the village where he was born.
